It happened last week Friday on Ebro Darden’s show. The song, called ‘Don’t Forget To Pray’, is the second single by Anatii and AKA who are preparing to release their joint album, Be Careful What You Wish For. They announced the album in March when AKA tweeted, “Me and Anatii need like 3 more tracks and we done.”
Their previous single ’10 Fingers’ was well-received by fans online, featuring vocals from both AKA and Anatii. Their latest, ‘Don’t Forget To Pray’, promises to catch on some heat, too.
While ’10 Fingers’ featured more singing than rapping, ‘Don’t Forget To Pray’ sees AKA drop serious bars. It’s certainly been a while, and fans are sure to appreciate the switch back into rhyme: “Swag drip on you trap kids who do wack shit for a summer smash/ Classics for you bastards/ I got mad hits in the Tupperware/ Gold rings like Shabba Ranks/ Ideas for your fucking brands/ White tears in the duffle bag/ I’mma die here in the motherland.”
Anatii’s verse is also impressive – he spits mostly in isiXhosa, exposing an ambidexterity not many knew he possessed, as he usually croons and raps in English.
Anatii and AKA’s first collaboration was Anatii’s ‘The Saga’ (2015) – another gem. A few months after the track’s release, the two artists reportedly had a feud, about which AKA let the world know on his diss track to Cassper Nyovest ‘Composure’: “I’m the reason people had ‘The Saga’ on repeat/ Now you wanna go and charge me 80 000 for a beat,” rapped Supa Mega on the song, which also happened to be produced by Anatii. Anatii then threatened to sue AKA, who he said didn’t have permission to use the same beat.
The two have since reconciled, and with their latest song, we can’t be grateful enough. Be Careful What You Wish For is one of the most anticipated SA hip-hop releases of 2017.
