In terms of quality of releases, AKA has been on a tear since the release of his sophomore album. ‘Composure’ was widely acclaimed critically, while ‘Baddest’ grew to become one of his most successful singles, further expanding on his brand of down tempo, Pan African, feel-good dance rap.
Now AKA and frequent collaborator Yanga have released a new song and video for the song ‘Dreamwork’ – a trap inspired slow burner on which he contemplates his current position in life while looking back at his younger days. The video shares this mood by showing the nostalgic Nintendo game Contra being played, except with a few well placed replacements – like a bottle of champagne being a power-up.
Lyrically it’s as catchy as you might expect, but the real joy here is the subtle yet strong wordplay employed (seriously, why has no-one else thought of describing their come up in rap as a “Skwatta Kamp-aigne”)
