The Booth: Floors Share Their Influences and Inspirations

Recently, we posted about new soul-electronica duo, Floors and their debut EP launch, which took place in Cape Town on the 25th of March. The show, which was also their debut performance, was sold out, and it was all too clear why. It was a truly immersive live experience of music, with gorgeously programmed lighting and visuals – the kind of performance where the tangibility of the effort, time and energy spent on its perfection became its own force, adding to their music’s profoundly immaculate execution.

Their EP, FADE, has been available for streaming on both Bandcamp and iTunes since that Saturday evening, and has already claimed the hearts of fans and fellow musicians alike. The writing and production on FADE is immaculate, echoing their performance ethic. We’re definitely looking forward to future releases from Floors as we anticipate more from this exciting duo.

We all want to know exactly what our favourite musicians are bumping to get a sense of where the magic (partly) comes from. The Booth is a taste of all that. This edition sees Floors sharing 5 tracks that they’re into, in no particular order:

Frank Ocean – ‘White Ferrari’

After the longest wait for a follow-up album to Channel Orange, Blond feels incredibly unfinished. Personally, I think it’s genius. Everything feels off the cuff, half written, half formed, uncertain. “White Ferrari” is so incredibly minimal and yet it’s littered with tiny little bits and pieces that come to the fore and then disappear, the structure seems completely improvised. The song has such a folky feel and very much feels like a precursor to what Bon Iver‘s 22, A Million sounds like. There are some parts that are almost identical in 22, A Million. The dissonant “whoo” vocal at the end is just great.

Bon Iver – ‘8 (Circle)’

Speaking of Bon Iver, this is my current favourite track off 22, A Million. I found his live performance of the song (as part of a full performance streamed on NPR) really emotive. I liked Bon Iver before but this new direction has captivated me. I think I’ve listened to the album once a day for about 2 weeks now. Its blend between folk sensibility and glitchy and expressive production elements really leaves me wanting to listen to it obsessively.

Hiatus Kaiyote – ‘Borderline With My Atoms’

One of my favourite bands at the moment, I can’t stop listening to this album for its broad pallet of synthesisers, soulful vocals, harmonic intensity and temperamental groove structures. There is something so lush and ever-changing about this song, with real structure and lyrical intention. There is so much sound on this album that it becomes overwhelming at times, this song is like a breath of fresh air in amongst the beautifully crafted chaos.

James Blake – ‘F.O.R.E.V.E.R’

I can’t get over this guy’s lyrical genius. His songs mean everything and yet nothing at all which stirs up emotions in me that are incredibly hard to describe. There is always that one track on his album, recorded on a shitty mic, in his bedroom most probably of him just playing and singing; bearing his soul essentially. I love how stripped down this song feels, how intimate the vocal is, how dysfunctional the harmony is. The choral, almost hymn-like nature of his piano voicings in the uncomfortable contemporary setting in which they are displayed is genius. It’s just so human, so unapologetic in its vulnerability and I love that.


Card On Spokes – ‘Rubber Tooth’

Shane Cooper has always been a massively talented individual. From being an insanely good upright bass player, his composition and production as COS is really detailed and flavourful. Shane’s natural sense of groove and feel as well as his use of acoustic instrumentation fits beautifully within the electronic landscape that he creates. His experience as a jazz bass player and composer lends a really detailed and informed sensibility to the music that transcends a wide range of musical genres so effortlessly. The percussive intricacies on this track are mind-blowing!
