Today Churn – the left-ish one-day electronic music excursion in East Jozi – have made their Special Guest announcement for the third instalment of the event on the first weekend of October. Having already announced exciting local producers Fever Trails and mono_sono, as well as DJ Mighty, Andrew the DJ, Warren Bokwe, Dexterity and Lenzo, today’s announcement of Germany’s Frederic Robinson confirms just how brilliant this unique experience is going to be.
Frederic Robinson – who is affiliated with Hospital Records, Brownswood, Med School and Blue Mar Ten – wields genre-stretching and intricate electronic arrangements that submerse the listener into intimate and emotive spaces. His background in classical violin and audio design evidently facilitates his musical innovations, with his fascination reportedly stemming primarily from the vast sonic possibilities that emerge when he combines organic sounds and electronic compositions.
While it is hard to describe Robinson’s music in words, the write-up about Robinson on the Churn event page has been able to get pretty close – “The music itself is beautiful, both subtle and satisfying. Harmonies rush and swoop, collapsing in on each other amid fractured percussion and sparkling melody, simultaneously muscular and fragile. Motifs appear, become warped, then reappear in different forms, helping the music to talk about itself while it shifts through distinct movements of light and shade.”
Past Churns have been incredible musical experiences. With the addition of this special guest to the line-up, there is no doubt that it will be another year for the books.
