This past year or so has blessed us with a flurry of offerings on the South African musical landscape, with a number of producer-vocalist duos showing up, both in the form of established acts, as well as one-track collaborations.
Floors is an attentively anticipated addition to this exciting list – and their debut EP, FADE, launches on Saturday.
The duo is a pair of talented multi-instrumentalists. Mikhaela Faye (a PHFat collaborator who’s also performed with folktronica darling Imogen Heap) shows her versatility on vocals, synths, piano and production, and Greg Abrahams (of Original Swimming Party and Nomadic Orchestra) is equally impressive on guitars, synths, production and mixing.
With their use of vintage synths and guitars, soulful vocals and detailed production, Floors plays lush, mood-based electronica. Their music provides a broad pallet of acoustic, experimental and electronic sounds that create an expansive and immersive listening experience.
The launch is sure to be an incredible event, and promises to be “an immersive and cutting edge audio/visual performance. Combining tightly programmed lighting and visuals with a sonically diverse musical backdrop, merging these elements to create a multi-sensory and highly visceral experience. Their sound is integrally linked to the visual experience created in collaboration with Bad Weather and The Grrrl.”
So far, we’ve been treated to an innovative website, a tantalising EP preview, and a video teaser – which all reveal how passionate Floors is about their craft, and how exciting they already are as a duo. Their debut performance is bound to do just the same.
