South By Southwest (SXSW) is probably as big a deal on the international festival circuit as K.O. is on the local rap scene. SXSW almost needs no introduction as a multimedia festival worth millions, while former Teargas member K.O. has had the entire country dancing since his 2014 single ‘Caracara’, which garnered millions of views, earned him and Kid X a couple of SAMAs and generally became everyone’s favourite thing. With this in mind it’s was a proud moment for both K.O. personally and the country at large when it was announced earlier this week that K.O. would be headlining the Austin-based festival. This, along with the announcement of Black Coffee’s booking at Coachella and Cape Town-raised Petite Noir‘s at SXSW too, marks a real step forward for the state of South African music abroad and its encouraging to see our best being on the bill at internationally lauded festivals like these.
In a brief statement about the booking, K.O. said:
“Being tasked with representing your country on such a huge platform is in fact a tall order, but as an artist who’s waited all his life for such a momentous opportunity I’m determined and know I will excel on that stage! This is literally a launching phase for my brand and SA Hip-hop in the US and the idea is to make an indelible mark for us to be able to solidify our presence that side”
Here’s to hoping that this is just the first in a long series of such moments for the country.
