For those who might have not yet had the pleasure of experiencing the work of sister-duo, Kajama, ‘Block’ is the second offering from producers and vocalists Nandi and Nongoma Ndlovu – and it premieres here today.
Having recently settled in Johannesburg, the ‘future soul electronica’ duo have spent the past few months hard at work on establishing Kajama, following an initial series of contributions to other projects. They’ve found a home in Johannesburg-based label, Subterranean Wavelength, who released their debut track, ‘Tricks’, in August last year. Now, six months later, ‘Block’ maintains Nandi’s immaculate and soulfully punchy production, with Nongoma trading in that first track’s assertive vocals for a more soothing, but no-less-captivating lament.
“The song is inspired by our ecosystem. It speaks about the relationship between the sun, plants and insects. The coexistence and understanding one another’s role to continue to survive.” This was Kajama’s response to my asking if anything specific had inspired the track. Considering the heartfelt repetition of the lyrics, “Please, please don’t let go”; this makes for one incredibly powerful insight.
Keep an eye out for Kajama’s forthcoming as-yet-unnamed EP, set to drop in March. They will be playing a set alongside Bongeziwe Mabandla at Alice Phoebe Lou‘s first Joburg headline show at Good Luck Bar in Newtown on Sunday 5 Feb.
