Technically, putting aside a highly anticipated tour across the US and Europe that’s on the cards, the last time we heard from the French outfit and Anthony Gonzalez was following the release of the acclaimed and ethereal Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming. It may have been a while since its breakthrough release in 2011, but it would’ve been fair to expect more of the same sombrely hopeful electronic music from M83 after the love that the ambitious double-album received.
Well, there’s definitely something hopeful about ‘Do It, Try It’ other than its urging words, but you’d be hard pressed to find anything sombre about the triumphant sounds here. All of the pent up whimsy from the dreamlike adventures of Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming has been turned into pure kinetic energy in a brief, but ambitious club banger. The rattling and reverberating rhythm acts like a magnet as jubilant choir voices are sucked into the exultant melody. We’re only allowed to breathe for but a second in the track’s interlude, but before we know it, it’s building once more with a simple keyboard melody that fractures into dizzyingly unencumbered, and joyfully synthesised, bursts of energy. ‘Do It, Try It’ is the first single released ahead of M83’s seventh studio album Junk, that’s due just next month and all indications from Gonzalez would lead one to believe that the rest of the album will be just as joyous and unfettered as the first single.
