mono_sono is the moniker of Joburg-based DJ/Producer, Jarred Parenzee. He’s been spinning a healthy diet of dance music centred around a love for drum ‘n bass for a few years now. With a sound and skill well associated with the likes of Joburg collective Hadedah and fellow producers Micr.Pluto, LEEU, Behr and Healer Oran, it’s no surprise that he was one of the first acts announced for this year’s Churn. This takes place tomorrow just outside of Joburg at Tweefontein Melkery and boasts a truly exciting line-up of South Africa’s finest including the likes of Fever Trails, Jumping Back Slash, DJ Danger Ingozi and German electronica extraordinaire Frederic Robinson. We all want to know exactly what our favourite musicians are bumping, to get a sense of where the magic (partly) comes from. The Booth is a taste of all that. mono_sono has shared with us 5 tracks that he’s into, in no particular order:
Fracture, Spinn & Taso – ‘Acid Claps’
“I’ve been playing this banger in my sets for the past few months. It has all my favourite ingredients; great bassline, chopped breaks, pads and a mean acid line.”
Roly Porter – ‘Mass’
“Play loud! And get immersed in tearing debris, twinkling synths and heavy kicks modelled on the physics of a bouncing ball.”
Logan Takahashi – ‘Rekr’
“Love the interlocked grooves and drifting melodies on this one.”
Chino Amobi – ‘Rotterdam’
“There’s some real feelings of dread on this track. Low key banger.”
Zuli – ‘Robotic Handshakes in 4D’
“Really simple and gritty soundsystem track, with metallic percussion and time stretched vocal snips. The ghosts of techstep era dnb is all over this and it’s an era I was really into.”
Again, catch mono_sono this Saturday at midnight at Churn 2016. He plays after Micr.Pluto and precedes Fever Trails and Frederic Robinson on the main floor.
