Once Batuk’s ‘Daniel’ began to creep up in select corners of Soundcloud towards the end of 2015, it was obvious that the quartet of Spoek Mathambo, Aero Manyelo, Carla Fonseca and Nandi Ndlovu felt they had something very real bubbling beneath their initially dazzling surface. Yesterday, Batuk announced (via Twitter) the release of ‘Daniel’s entrancing video – shot in the dusky umber of a stretch of Mozambiquan landscape – together with an EP that includes a set of diversely satisfying remixes of the single and a teaser for new music ahead.
It’s the pan-like synths that form the backbone of ‘Daniel’ and manage to drive all the subtle energies of the track. The beat has also been given space to imbibe the vibrance of some of its traditional music influences. That’s mainly what’s allowed artists like Homeboyz (Angola) and Daniel Haaksman to twist and wreak the rhythm around its frame without losing its magnetic, pulsing essence. Batuk remain as intriguing as ever, yet with a tour and a record on the cards for this year, we’ll have to exercise some degree of patience to see just where they end up next.
