With the early-year releases of Tobias Jesso Jr.’s Goon and Father John Misty’s I Love You, Honeybear, 2015 was supposed to herald the return of the male singer-songwriter.
‘Cool Out’, the new cut from Matthew E. White provides a nice summary of how the year panned out in reality: its most prominent feature is his being outshone by the confidence of Natalie Prass. Prass’ eponymous debut, along with releases from Waxahatchee, Joanna Newsom, Courtney Barnett and others were a sign that, if anything, 2015 was a year of their being surpassed by female counterparts. And after the releases of Adele’s 25 and Rihanna’s ANTI, they’re set to dominate the charts in 2016 too. So, when the chorus of the song has White imploring Prass to “cool out, baby”, it seems likely that her response will be to do anything but.
