Pro, one of the best to ever do it, has been showing some deterioration in the past few years. His 2005 debut album Heads and Tales is an undebatable classic. Since then, Pro has been pretty hit-and-miss. This year, his verse on the remix to DJ Switch’s anti-dab rappity rap single ‘Now Or Never’ disappointed a lot of the Soweto rhyme-slayer’s fans.
Today, the legend released his long-promised single, ‘Pholas’, which features another Zulu lyrical monster, K.O., who drops his intricate flows as usual. The track, produced by the prolific Ganja Beatz, sonically evokes a typical ‘Cashtime Life’ cut, but also has an old school kwaito feel, along the lines of Ma-E’s ‘uGOGO‘.
Pro and K.O. drop many quotables worthy of Facebook status updates. Pro sounds comfortable and confident throwing jabs at his doubters: “Nithi uwile but you keep bringing his name up/ Why you think we don’t drink from the same cup?” ‘Pholas’ has potential of being a hit single, and would live comfortably blasting from shebeens, taxis and clubs.
Maybe Pro is back to top form. It’s up to the fans and doubters alike to decide. In the mean time, stream ‘Pholas’ below:
