On Friday Joburg rapper Solo let loose ‘Jubilee noLigaMo’, a track off his upcoming sophomore album Dreams.B.Plenty, which is due out September 16. The single is a sonic ambivalence in that it tells you to chill and get up at the same time, with loungey textured pads, a low creeping bassline and a bouncey rhythm. The soundscape is perfect for Solo’s laidback delivery, and he doesn’t disappoint, as usual, with an unmatchable clarity and solid delivery. Solo is musing on his late grandmother and cousin, hoping they are looking after him in the other realm, as he celebrates how far he has come.
‘Jubilee noLigaMo’ is the third track to be released from Dreams.B.Plenty since it was announced last year. ‘Poster Child’, the first single was released last year, and it was followed by ‘How Cool Is This Love‘ featuring Ziyon a few months back.
Solo has been busy since the release of his critically acclaimed debut album Dreams.A.Plenty in 2014, which earned him a Best Freshman award at the 2014 South African Hip-Hop Awards as well as a Lyricist of the Year nomination. The album had some high profile guest features in the form of Tumi Molekane, ProVerb, Kabomo, Nothende, Reason, Nova and more. Most of the production was done by Buks (former member of IV League). Last year, Solo teamed up with Buks as BETRGANG to release a self-titled free mixtape which you should slap yourself in the face for sleeping on.
Solo, with a mostly soulful soundscape, is up against trap, the incumbent sound in mainstream South African hip-hop, and he’s well aware of it. Dreams.A.Plenty introduced him and what he stood for. It will be interesting to see what Dreams.B.Plenty does to solidify or evolve that stance.
‘Jubilee noLigaMo’ is only available for free for a limited time via the BETRGANG website.
