Just last month, Stiff Pap “raised the bar with their propulsive new EP,” Based On A Qho Story. This Sunday 30 July, they’re travelling up to Joburg to play at brilliant ZA underground subculture publication BubblegumClub‘s recently-launched performance showcase series, ‘New Sound Night‘. This instalment will happen during the day, starting at 2:30 at ‘Joziburg‘, which is touted as a fresh new venue at the refurbished One Eloff building in Marshalltown.
On last month’s release, Mohato Lekena explained that “[one half of Stiff Pap], Jakinda’s music is always danceable, but exudes a feeling of stasis rather than propulsion, favouring repetition over layering or high detail. With his latest collaboration, Jakinda pairs his ear for propulsive rhythm with the skills of Stiff Pap’s hyperactive emcee, AyemaProbllem.”
BubblegumClub’s New Sound Night has had 5 editions thus far, with the first being a launch party for new label Wet Dreams Recording’s debut compilation, Work Not Hype. Following that, other editions have featured rapper MxBlouse who released a bold and subversive EP in May, as well as experimental audio-visual performer Tra$hgodd, new age kwaito act Kobayashi and multidisciplinary artist and performer Agord Lean.
Stiff Pap will be supported on Sunday afternoon by Bo’s Hub, DJ Mdubulo, Fiji Fantana and, for a solo set, Jakinda.

[Ed’s note: A previous version of this article stated that there had only been 4 previous iterations of the event. Since corrected to include that the first was a launch event for Wet Dreams Recordings’ debut compilation. Our sincere apologies.]
