The Booth: David Thorpe

David Thorpe needs no introduction. From Gateway Drugs to Beach Party to The Dollfins to David Gabriel…

Fans, casual listeners and critics aren’t the only consumers of music. Every fortnight, we ask a prominent or exciting local artist to share five tracks that are currently on rotation on their boombox/diskman/Zune – oldies, latest hits, oddities and obscurities. Welcome to The Booth.

David Thorpe needs no introduction. From Gateway Drugs to Beach Party to The Dollfins to David Gabriel Corpse to Pussy Slap; the guy keeps himself busy on and off the stage. With his reputable dance moves and dynamic vocals, he’s making significant contributions to the growing South African music scene purely through the undying want to make music and for people to have a good time listening to it. Catch him at The Assembly on Saturday, this time as David Gabriel Corpse, for Assembly Radio’s 2nd Birthday Party. Here are his five tracks:

Chic – I Feel Your Love Comin’ On

I’ve been on this whole Chic rediscovery thing since I watched a live performance video of them at Glastonbury or something and they just absolutely killed it. Came across this song recently and I can’t stop playing it. Quite possibly the sexiest bass line in existence.

Blue Magic – For The Love Of You

I’m a sucker for a good slow jam. Came across Blue Magic’s 1983 album not so long ago and I can’t get enough.

The Originals – Suspicion

I’ve been listening to this track for the last 4 years and so far it hasn’t gotten old so I feel the need to share it at any opportunity I get. This is a bit of a crappy online version but it’s the best I can find.

Snoop Dogg – Gz and Hustlas

This just came on and why not. Can’t go too wrong with Snoop pre-Lion.

Black Lips – Funny

Black Lips’ new album is amazing just like the rest of their albums and this is my favourite song off it.
