The Booth: Jake Lipman

Fans, casual listeners and critics aren’t the only consumers of music. Every fortnight, we ask a prominent or exciting local artist to share five tracks that are currently on rotation on their boombox/diskman/Zune – oldies, latest hits, oddities and obscurities. Welcome to The Booth.

When not DJ-ing or producing tracks as JakobSnake, Jake Lipman heads up and co-founded the Cape Town-based artist management, bookings and production agency Gaartjie. He is largely responsible, along with 3 other co-founders, for the highly successful CTEMF that took place in February. He is also one half of the DJ-duo, BTEAM, and raps from time to time previously with Voicetag and Oh! Dark Arrow. As one of the leading figures in the Cape Town electronic music scene, his taste for tracks, ranging from bangers to your more sophisticated works, as well as the best of what South Africa has to offer in authentic electronic music, is virtually second to none. Catch him this weekend at CTWMF on the Electronic stage on Friday at 00:30 and with Okmalumkoolkat just before that at 23:30. You can also catch him as a speaker at the Light Bulb Sessions between 13:30 and 16:30 on Saturday  – a workshop element of the festival available to the public for free.

Listen to his latest mix, ‘Tremendous’, here.

Busdriver Ego Death feat. Aesop Rock and Danny Brown

Three of my favourite emcees on the planet all together in one tune.

I had forgotten how amazing and odd Busdriver was for a long time, and have started listening to a pretty health heap of Aesop Rock again along with my regular dose of Danny Brown!

theWHOevers Wings (prod. by Knxwledge)

The best new rap group out at the moment from Chicago, these dudes are gonna start making MAJOR waves soon – and if they don’t, they’ve made major waves in me! Nice throwback style. Knxwledge kills the beat.

Napolian Escobar (feat. Dezo)

I heard another version of this nearly 2 years ago now, and the upgrade is straight fucking WHITE-WASH! Napolian is ridiculous, I really love his crushed up sounds.

FKA twigs How’s That

Someone I really respect gave me this EP when he was down in SA last year, and I fell HARD! I knew coming from him it was special, but I never imaged how this lady would start owning the world. Magnificent video, still my favourite FKA Twigs tune.

Randomer Residents (LIES050)

A massive artist on one of my top 10 labels ever, this dude consistently drops pure flames. I have been eagerly awaiting this release.
