Fans, casual listeners and critics aren’t the only consumers of music. Every fortnight, we ask a prominent or exciting local artist to share five tracks that are currently on rotation on their boombox/diskman/Zune – oldies, latest hits, oddities and obscurities. Welcome to The Booth.

John Withers is the frontman and songwriter for what is arguably or easily (depending how you look at it) one of the most in-demand bands in the country at the moment – John Wizards. His combination of sounds and influences from around the country and continent has resulted in the eponymous album having Radius writer, Kevin Minofu, say the following in his review of the album in PLATFORM print issue 01: “…it is the honesty, this refusal to caricature, that makes John Wizards so exciting and important within the South African context.” Catch John Wizards on Friday at PLATFORM Presents 01.

Monique Seka – Missouwa

Sweet – just how I like it.

Burna Boy – Yawa Dey

That bassline – just as I like it.

DJ Spoko – Azange

Great for riding on the train.

Msunduza – Abdullah Ibrahim

I’ve come quite late to his work, but I’m really enjoying Abdullah Ibrahim at the moment.

Todd Terje – Delorean Dynamite

I think [his next album] It’s Album Time is out in a week, and I get the feeling that it’s going to be very good.
