The Booth: Okmalumkoolkat

Fans, casual listeners and critics aren’t the only consumers of music. Every fortnight, we ask a prominent or exciting local artist to share five tracks that are currently on rotation on their boombox/diskman/Zune – oldies, latest hits, oddities and obscurities. Welcome to The Booth.

Simiso Zwane aka Okmalumkoolkat aka Futuremfana aka Smartmampara aka Allblackblackkat aka Bhut’yang’chaza is undoubtedly the busiest figure of the increasingly vibrant South African hip hop scene. Having started out as a dancer and designer from Durban, Zwane made his way to eGoli around 2006 and has been on the hustle ever since. The formation of Dirty Paraffin with Dokta SpiZee as well as collaborations with UK electronic trio, LV, sent the Okmalumkoolkat franchise into overdrive. The past two years have seen him cruising from one successful collaborative track to the next with artists such as Sibot, Riky Rick, Boyzn Bucks, Reason, JR, Spoek Mathambo, Cassper Nyovest, Ox++ and JakobSnake when performing live. However, Monday 11 August will see the release of his debut solo 4-track EP entitled Holy Oxygen I. It will be released through Austrian label, Affine Records, and has been produced by label mates Cid Rim and The Clonius. It will be released in both digital and 12” vinyl form and is currently available for pre-order here.

Keep an out for the first of our PLATFORM documentaries series, to be released next week, where we spend a day with Okmalumkoolkat discussing everything from his everyday life to how he’s not that into fish-and-chips.

Here are his 5 tracks:

Dane Chadwick Cool EP

I was put on to Dane Chadwick by my only-the-freshest-music-in-my-library mate, Ravi, last year. This track hit me one chilly night in Jozi after a heavy weekend of performing and partying. I played it back to back for the next two days or so. What a spell. Dane Chadwick is a wizard. He is probably the only producer that could boast about being bricked by me on SoundCloud; asking for beats.

Sango Deixe-me

‘Deixe-me’ is my turn up track. If I get back home late at night and I cannot sleep, I start a whole new party by myself with this one. Goes down well with an early morning cup of tea.

dom$olo TaskforceTuesdayInterlude

dom$olo became my favourite producer overnight. Dr. SpiZee put me on this cat. The Boyzn Bucks have been using this track to perform ‘Umswenko’ which has become something of a phenomenon in our sets and we haven’t even recorded it yet. The buzz is so big we could probably sell a blank disc with a wild photoshoot on the sleeve.

Okmalumkoolkat Holy Oxygen

My new project, this fokoff-awesome four track EP titled, Holy Oxygen, is available for pre-order online. Futuremfana zulu mythology sci-fi fuckery on the speak. Got these two wizards from Vienna, Austria on production, Cid Rim and The Clonious. Merlin’s magic in the present.

Ox++, Okmalumkoolkat, Bra Sol & Nonku Phiri Rome

This is a track that me, Bra Sol, Nonku and Ox++ did at last year’s Red Bull Bass Camp Johannesburg. I think it’s the first track I did there. It’s a banger for sure. It keeps coming up in all my playlists right now.
