Fans, casual listeners and critics aren’t the only consumers of music. Every fortnight, we ask a prominent or exciting local artist to share five tracks that are currently on rotation on their boombox/diskman/Zune – oldies, latest hits, oddities and obscurities. Welcome to The Booth.

With strong links to the pioneering African Dope Records, Ross Finck is one of the godfathers of the South African electronic music scene, particularly in the realm of glitch and hip hop. He boasts a great line of monikers ranging from Dank – the most well known – to DJ Caviar as one half of Sedge Warbler and Ricky Spanish as one half of Seafood, his production abilities have been applied in all the right places. While still working on various solo and group projects, Finck has also garnered a well earned reputation as one of Cape Town’s finest mastering producers, providing world class final touches to an impressive amount of current local music being released. Here are his 5 tracks:

Claude VonStroke – Plasma Jelly (Eprom Remix)

Love this stuff that Eprom is coming up with these days. Forward thinking – will most probably always be a fan.

Boats – Drop A Track

Boats sounds similar to Eprom for me; working on similar tempos without confining himself to the “trap”. Super innovative producer.

Slugabed – Smile 4 Me

Slugabed has been on my favourite list for ages and this track reminds me of the stuff he produced further back which I always loved and was influenced by.

b00n – Save

b00n is one of the fresher dudes in this country at the moment and I think his stuff is mad!! But at the same time easy to listen to and makes you think about weird shit.

Mad Zach & G Jones – Spontaneity

This for me is one of the best tracks out there at the moment, even though it’s old. I like its low slung and wonky VIBE – love this shit.

Fever Trails – Fever Trails

Nic [van Reenen] is easily one of the most ‘out there’ composers in SA at the moment – can’t even classify his stuff, YAY!!!!! Dude has a bright future and most definitely on an international level … ‘Journey music’?? Best shit!
