The Booth: Sebastiano Zanasi

Fans, casual listeners and critics aren’t the only consumers of music. Every fortnight, we ask a prominent or exciting local artist to share five tracks that are currently on rotation on their boombox/diskman/Zune – oldies, latest hits, oddities and obscurities. Welcome to The Booth.

Sebastiano Zanasi is a Capetonian whose talent is matched only by his work ethic. One half of local favourites Christian Tiger School, he is also a creative force behind progressive, boundary-pushing acts Fever Trails and Yes In French. What follows are his selections, five tracks that are, fittingly, as eclectic as his musical sensibilities.

1. Chrome Country – Oneohtrix Point Never

It’s the prettiest song in the universe and I want to eat it.

2. Use of Light – Kurt Rosenwinkel

Kurt is my favourite guitarist at the moment and he composes really sensible jazz that’s not wanky. ‘Use of Light’ is 8 minutes of constant jazz bek. There’s also live recording of this song where he plays with Brad Mehldau and Josh Redman. YOH.

3. Keep a Document – Bullion

I recently found about Bullion. He’s great! It’s just really fresh stuff. Floaty guitar chords, thick English accent and simple drums. I’m into that.

4. Wrong Distance and Time – Dream Love

Hip cats from Brooklyn, DUH! They are/were connected to Stones Throw in some way. It’s like Toro Y Moi meets Joy Division. Slightly stressful funk. All their songs on their self titled album are dope, especially ‘We Got a Tan’.

5. Just Decided (feat. Oliver Daysoul) – Hudson Mohawke

Wild HudMo shit: using cheesy sounds but coming out with the hippest stuff ever. Fills the hole that Andre 3000’s, The Love Below, left behind.
