Wednesday saw the release of Layers, a 5-track EP produced in bits and pieces by Thibo Tazz over the past two years. In a recent post, Red Bull Studios described the tracks as “elongated deep-house instrumental compositions, each track building from minimal tech-house elements to grow into a lush, futuristic blend of soul and machine.”
Since attending the Red Bull Academy in 2008, Thibo Tazz has been on the rise as one of the premiere deep house producers in Cape Town. PLATFORM was fortunate enough to host him at PLATFORM Presents 01 in April, after which he has enjoyed some serious career highlights including his set at Glastonbury – where he also ended up playing an impromptu set with Skrillex and fellow South African DJ Fosta.
However, the fantastically unique element to the release of Layers is that the EP was released under a Creative Commons licence and is accompanied by the separate stems for each track. This allows aspiring producers and fans to download them and create their own versions of the tracks. This can take the form of creating a whole brand new track, simply adding vocals to the original track, creating artwork or creating a music video. Anything goes. The best works will be selected and release through the various Red Bull Studios Cape Town channels.
It’s great to see how much backing Red Bull Studios has given this project – even if just by the evidence of the billboard placement in both Cape Town and Johannesburg. PLATFORM will keep a close eye on this extremely exciting and innovative project which is reaching beyond the scopes of the CBD and providing a much larger market with an opportunity to have their work exposed through a world class lens.
