Producer and one half of the Gateway Drugs outfit, Andrew Esterhuizen, is normally content to work behind the shadowy deck and be the denim-clad, bleach-blond (now shaved-headed) silent partner to David Thorpe’s unimpeachable on-stage exuberance. This effort from Andy Islands, as we are now to know him, is a shift from the euphoric synth-laden retro-stylings of Gateway Drugs. And perhaps this is Esterhuizen’s deserved, yet tentative sidestep into the limelight.

Instead of the melody and beat climbing upwards and along with no end in sight, ‘Swirly’ is far subtler. It creeps along slowly, steadily as the perennial synths worm their way into any willing ear. One can’t help but be mesmerised by their interaction with the rumbling bass – even when they step out of the forefront of the beat. The progressions are so light and clever that ‘Swirly”s eight minutes go by unnoticed. It’s the type of tune that would light up a dance floor as a crowd slowly lost themselves to the hypnotic, infinite beat.
