Ariel Pink remains one of the last truly crocked and off-kilter musicians of our time – in a way that ‘eccentric’ hardly scratches the surface. That’s why the news that Pink is leaving the Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti project aside for the time being and releasing his first solo album, pom pom, is to be received with equal parts excitement and trepidation. It promises an Ariel Pink that is synth-less and unencumbered, and the idea is very nearly overwhelming.

The first single shared ahead of pom pom’s November release is ‘Put Your Number In My Phone’. Like Mature Theme’s excellent ‘Only In My Dreams’ the innocuous title is the only warning bell that’s rung. ‘Put Your Number In My Phone’ tinkles in a sickeningly, sing-song fashion that makes it sound like a jingle for a seedy dating agency gone bankrupt circa 1970. Towards the end of the track, a recording of a ditzy, prospective lover named Jessica leaving a fumbling voicemail on an apathetic Pink’s machine cuts through the deceptively sweet melody. With it, the promise of sensuality and burgeoning romance that had tinged the trilling guitar is suddenly turned inside out, tinkling its way right to the bottom of one’s stomach.
