The Cape Town surf-rock outfit are back with a well anticipated video-and-track combo, much to the delight of devoted fans. In both track and video, ‘I Want To’ immediately sees a more minimalistic approach, with most of the track carried by a simple groove on the drums, light doo-wop guitar chirps and the sincerely appropriated and dreamy Beach Boys-esque falsetto and back-up harmonies. However, this is not without the band’s signature use of a solid synth hook, which enters towards the end of the track, providing it with a more youthful streak through an uplifting and nostalgic progression.

The video finds the band and friends having a firecracker and sparklers by the bonfire kind of beach party. The direction of Dylan Culhane and editing of Xander van der Westhuizen perfectly maintain and express the band’s sense of humour and fun through an envy inducing, but honest and idyllic moment. The track communicates the same sentiment and could hint towards the kind of development their work will take. We’ll see. But for now, it’s exciting.
