Track of the Day: Beck – Waking Light

Despite being the musical iconoclast of a generation, Beck has never been one to rest on his laurels. From his early days as a rabble-rousing troubadour of lo-fi, hip-hop indebted slacker rock, to his later groovy funk experiments, he morphs from album to album. This chameleon-like skill could also be a symptom of someone who is a little uncomfortable with his own identity. On his new album Morning Phase he appears to be most relaxed in his skin as a swooning, orchestral balladeer. It’s his most paired down release since the haunting Sea Change

This is most indicative on the mighty closing song, ‘Waking Light’, with its deft nods to classic rock, John Lennon and twinkling space rock. As it grabs hold of you with the elegiac string section and the heart-in-mouth epic climax, Beck reminds you that even after a quarter century in the business, he remains a true, original and consummate artist.
