Chromatics have released some enjoyable tracks over the past two years, but have yet to release another full-length since 2012-highlight, Kill For Love. On that record, Italians Do It Better’s main attraction displayed a range in their song-writing, crafting seventeen tracks that varied in timespan from two minutes to fourteen. Under the artistic captaincy of Johnny Jewel, they succeeded in capturing the same nocturnal passion and intensity on every song, regardless of length.
‘Closer to Grey’ is a fine illustration of Chromatics’ talent to charge two short minutes with the contrasting undertones of seediness and glamour, and poeticised imagery of street-dwelling nightlife with un-severable ties to the unsavoury. Perhaps that context isn’t as apparent to newcomers, but even then, it’s a characteristic, dramatic disco spin-off that will embellish your midnight prowl of the city in your car.
