Monday saw Felix White’s side project surface online. An EP made in between recording sessions with The Maccabees. Felix had initially intended the project to be fully instrumental, a means to hash out other sounds he was working with post-Mercury-nominated Maccabees Album, Given To the Wild. What has resulted however is a fantastic collection of pieces featuring the likes of Jessie Ware, Florence Welch (Florence and the Machine), long time friend, Jack Peñate and his brother Hugo – fellow Maccabees guitarist – just to name a few.
‘Yalla’ is one of the tracks that has been published on their Youtube channel and features Jack Peñate on vocals. A soothing and uplifting refrain has Jack chanting “We’re the masters of what we want/We’re the masters of who we are/But we follow a frame that was/Built as a game… and again”. The themes both lyrically and sonically don’t present too much of a departure from the Maccabees canon. With the signature guitar haze that Felix and Hugo have mastered with the Maccabees smothering the track, it leaves you feeling much like the dude in the video (co-directed by Felix and George Bellfield).
