‘Drown’, the bonus track off of The Future’s Void, EMA’s spellbinding album from earlier on this year, finds EMA traversing a desolate and collapsing world. The song touches on the same themes of technology, the Internet and our morbid alienating fascination with it. This, in an age of over-exposure and celebrity as we desperately attempt to “drown” each other.

The album found EMA melding her post-rock and electronic leanings to full jarring effect, but this track is almost straightforward in its composition of ominous electronic dread. Covered in a thick layer of static gauze, the murmuring synths create a sinister miasma of loathing and self-loathing, as our lives are increasingly submerged under the rising water of our detached futures. But as always, EMA is not playing the fearful or moralising Luddite but over warbling computer effects she sings in hushed tones, “they’re obsessed with the concept of failure / And it haunts me too”. The source of EMA’s fear is not lying somewhere in the diffuse faceless cyberweb – what haunts her is inside of her, inside of all us. It haunts me too.
