Made up of the eclectic talents of DJ Spoko, Bhekisenzo Cele, Andre Geldenhuys, and led by the inimitable Spoek Mathambo; Fantasma are a group that can bring both a crowd and the blood to boiling point. Their latest single is ‘Eye of the Sun’ and it’s taken off their upcoming EP of the same name.  Here, the quartet only whet the appetite of their admirers ahead of their highly anticipated performance at Sónar 2014.

‘Eye of the Sun’ immediately sweeps one into the psychedelic afro-groove Fantasma have become so adept at weaving out. Geldenhuys’ buzzing guitar cruelly teases: stuttering and stopping, meandering and then completely running away altogether. The sound is wild yet ceaselessly rhythmic; ululations periodically meld into the reverb of an errant electric guitar and an invisible fire is slowly stoked.  For his own part, Spoek Mathambo leaps into a – quite literally – breath-taking break-neck verse that rouses and rises to somehow float above the reverb dappled guitar and ebullient horn section.  The trance-like and echoing refrain of “Eye of the sun” only speaks to the omnipotent energy that Fantasma seem to radiate. It’s an energy that seeks to consume. In fact, it’s only reasonable of them to allow a few seconds of silence mid-track so one may finally catch a breath.
