After a lonely hiatus following the release of Dark Days Exit in 2005, South African electronica veteran, Felix Laband, has shared three tracks from his ever-forthcoming album, Deaf Safari. ‘Ding Dong Thing’ stands out as the most irresistible of them all, with its balancing of Laband’s radiant electronic senses and a newfound political consciousness.

‘Ding Dong Thing’ owes its name to its introductory recording, an audio loop referring to the back-and-forth appeals arising from President Zuma’s numerous legal strifes. Seamlessly placed over a heavy bass kick, the recording gives way to a glimmering deliverance. Clean and simulated finger-picking ebbs and flows for the full twelve minutes, met with various percussive ticks and vocal loops throughout. In a 2012 interview with Resident Advisor, Laband said, “I’l never leave out the feeling of home in my music. It’s in my blood.” ’Ding Dong Thing’ corroborates this, but it only furthers our restlessness for the official release of the long-overdue Deaf Safari. Could these Soundcloud releases portend it? We hope so.
