The Brooklyn-based band Friends’ released their single ‘The Way’ back in July and it featured the excellent production of in-demand pop wizard Dev Hynes. It was a slowly unfurling ballad featuring smoldering Prince-like guitars.
In the last month Dev Hynes’ released his excellent album Cupid Deluxe under his Blood Orange moniker where Friends’ lead singer Samantha Urbani proved the perfect foil on a number of tracks for Hynes’ funk, RnB and new wave experiments. He returns the favour here with his outstanding remix of the original Friends song. It features the same spaced-out production that allows Urbani’s stunning and sultry voice to shimmer amongst the rubble of a thunderous bass and the same crushing guitar licks. Hynes then injects further drama with some devastating harmonising that lifts the song to serious astral heights. What was a very good song becomes a brooding and bold statement on a cold unrequited love. It is a true unashamed pop epic. Dev Hynes is a man who, at this moment, can truly do no wrong. We can only hope and pray that his purple patch continues.
