After having worn out Jessie Ware’s masterful 2012 debut, Devotion, it’s difficult to imagine that Ware would only now begin to want to sound the part of a pop star. Talented, yet with a charmingly self-effacing quality that seemed not to match her ambition, her sophomore album, Tough Love, aspires to be the big break for Ware. ‘Say You Love Me’  – an unabashed, broken-hearted ballad – is the tinder to the explosion that Sam Smith, and those of his ilk, have so enjoyed – and that Jessie Ware surely deserves.

‘Say You Love Me’ is a leap from the slow-burning, densely layered sounds of Devotion. It’s the most commercially-minded track we’ve heard from Ware, and yet her smouldering and soulful voice seems to grant her some grand indemnity from the sordidness of it all. In fact, just from hearing the track one would be decidedly unsurprised to hear that Ed Sheeran – mawkish mastermind – had had a hand in its writing.  But the emotion is raw, demanding and all of Jessie Ware’s own. She’s vulnerable whilst doling out a new-found confidence in generous heaps. When the track bursts into life with a Ware-led chorus line, its difficult not to want to share in her quiet triumph.
