Kele Okereke has long wanted to break free of the indie-rock shackles that his heyday as frontman of Bloc Party forced on him. On his debut album, The Boxer, this transition proved difficult on a collection of competent yet uninspired and uneven electro-rock songs. His new single, ‘Doubt’, shows a newfound commitment and confidence to his persona as just ‘Kele’.

The beat, which is a straightforward, dark and throbbing house number, allows the inflections of Kele’s voice to coil and croon around the bristling production. The best Bloc Party songs allowed Kele to go from cocksure to callous in swift transitions; but here, using a different foil, he sounds vulnerable and raw – just like the emotion that gives the song its name.
