Johannesburg native, Dennis Lefa Halo, is a rapper that can cut a decidedly Delphic figure at times. While he may quietly navigate the complexities of Mzansi’s self-contained, but bourgeoning hip-hop scene, he’s anything but robust in his approach to lyricism and flow within his budding body of work.
‘Loose Chains’ is a track featuring on Air Drop Life that was dropped unobtrusively on his Soundcloud page last year. Struggling for exposure in an underground hip-hop scene largely gaining momentum in Maboneng and Newtown, the few tracks gained much from the seasoned mastering of Tux, a producer known for his gritty, hard-hitting approach.
Lefa spits a set of razor-sharp couplets that are complemented by the whetstone of the swaggering beat and a sensual saxophone melody. Wickedly quick, but keeping us in perfect step, his best skillsets are his deftness in turns of phrase and uncompromising flow. In conjunction with Hustle On Your Grind, Lefa has more recently released a track featuring the talented TSA Nobody Else. Following undaunted in Drake’s steps, it samples Jai Paul’s ‘BTSTU’ and is called ‘Dreams Money Can Sell’. It is freely available for download and is a thoroughly exciting effort that well whets the appetite for things to come.
