“Shit,” sighs Mac DeMarco at the start of his second single off upcoming album Salad Days. And, frankly, that pointed exhale just about sums it up. Hushed, slow-moving and just about as sensual, “Brother” is surely the gritty and grimy Canadian at his best.

DeMarco’s honeyed exhales and inhales sound like he’s on an old-school R&B joint playing on a boombox on a summer’s day. Like they’re from another time entirely. All the while, the track is slowly pushed off its kilter as we spiral into the psychedelic haze of DeMarco’s dreamy and gruff voice echoing over ever-slick guitar plucking. Despite the sobriety of thought and lyric, the sun-dappled sound still smells of stale alcohol and hand-rolled cigarettes. Mac DeMarco has staked claim to his craft here and it’s never sounded so easy for him.
