Track of the Day: Mas Ysa – Shame

Mas Ysa is an avant-garde fresh-face from Montreal that is making a name for himself via word of mouth and internet buzz after having played shows with RZA, Deerhunter and Purity Ring. That Thomas Arsenault’s work draws the attention of acts from different regions of the sonic atlas is testament to the largely unclassifiable nature of much of his for-the-moment limited repertoire. This is ostensibly the case with ‘Shame’ – a rich, thumping voyage off his Worth EP; not tortuous as much as it is characterised by its explosive ups and contextualising downs.

It is difficult to comprehend some linear narrative here, even after a few listens. But Ysa’s message is all but lost as his resolutely sanguine disposition shines through the speakers via the contrast of his Oberst-esque quavering vocals and perceived volatility with the elated climaxes that place him at the conquering peak of that which he has overcome. These moments of pure emotional deliverance take centre-stage and are reminiscent of M83 at their most cathartic.
