In January of last year, Merchandise released the sprawling ‘Anxiety’s Door’ – indubitably one of 2013’s defining singles that cemented the Florida-based outfit on critics’ radars with a waxing fanbase to boot. The eclectic trio have released two new tracks this year so far – ‘Figured Out’ and ‘Enemy’ – from the After the End LP due late August. True to their press-statements, both tracks see the band wholly indulging the poppier side of the ‘art-pop’ label bestowed upon them.

‘Enemy’ is an uplifting number with a refreshing, acoustic-guitar dominated rhythm section and keyboards straight out of new-wave’s heyday. Still, Carson Cox refrains from betraying the rebellious promise of his trademark wayfarers with his lyrics, crooning “What if I don’t want to pray to your god every day? … I just want to sing for myself, this way”.
