Metronomy is effectively Joe Mount’s vanity project. The lead singer and writer uses the band to create slight, shuffling, and sublime dance-tinged pop music. Their excellent 2011 album The English Rivieria mastered the little steps in composition to make grand leaps in the style of a band that previously could come off as a bit stale.
Their new single is ‘I’m Aquarius’ off their new album Love Letters, which is due next year January. He follows hot on the heels of previous white-boys-with-a-little-funk like Hot Chip, in using an infectious synth riff and a drum track to build the song around. The trick in this song is the vocal harmonies between Joe Mount and Anna Prior, as Mount’s voice pleads, strains and emotes all over the track. It’s their best impression of 90s R&B and the single fits right into Metronomy’s great catalogue of simply-built yet catchy-as-hell dance music and merely makes the wait for their album more exciting.
