Mikal Cronin has emerged once again from underneath his scraggly, long hair with a single for LAMC (Less Artists’s More Condos), and the last of a series of split 7” singles from various artists. After last year’s brilliant MCII, we’ve learned not to take Cronin’s unassuming demeanour at face-value.

‘Soul In Motion’ is already a gear-shift with its driving drum machine track that’s shortly interrupted by punky bursts of cymbal crashes and a yelled refrain of a line that could be mistaken for a Sufjan Stevens’ song. The saxophone is ostensibly more incongruous, but in fact the natural companion here to Cronin’s tenderly strummed 12-string guitar. It all amounts to a loose, colourful track that’s of a different tack to his previous work, but as Cronin yells mid-track for all to hear “fuck it, man,” it’s great anyway.
