There’s a strange sense of connection in Mndsgn’s music. Probably because one can easily imagine dozens of kids in headphones simultaneously clicking play, closing their eyes and getting lost in this little world that Ringgo Ancheta has carved open.
Ancheta was raised improbably: in a world isolated from the technology (and electricity) of the modern world in rural New Jersey. Instead of it making the sounds of Mndsgn those of a hermit hunkered down in the habitual, they instead reflect a wide-eyed wonder in his beatmaking. Everything is as novel and joyous to him as it is for a listener.
‘Txt’, vowel-less and expansive, shimmers with an irresistible retro and sensual quality. It imitates the sounds of a small and simple rapture and Ancheta is unabashed in his bliss. His first release was in 2009, and having collaborated with Danny Brown last year, he already struts within his sounds like an old master. It makes the thought of things to come, his album Yawn Zen, a gloriously exciting prospect.
