James Murphy famously sang, “I hear that you and your band have sold your guitars and bought turntables. I hear that you and your band have sold your turntables and bought guitars.” If there’s a mantra for the burgeoning music genre at the moment, it is that the indie kids have kept both their turntables and guitars and invested in some old Usher and TLC albums. Since the The xx’s debut, there seems to be a new alternative take on R‘nB sprouting every other week, but no one seems to be doing it as confidently and as idiosyncratically as the Australian band Movement are doing it on the beguiling, ‘Like Lust’.

Incorporating the dark sonics of The Weeknd and the soft falsetto notes of a James Blake, ‘Like Lust’ breathes and unfolds just like you would imagine the carnality of lust would. Backed by probing drums, the minimalist elements eventually erupt in a synthy chill of looping ecstasy. It is sensual without being sleazy; intimate without a hint of meekness; and aqueous with instrumentals that remain tight and structured. It all makes for a genre smashing single that stands out from the rest of the madding, craft beer drinking crowd.
