Pop-punk is not dead. Philadelphia three-piece Nona prove exactly that with the re-issue of their debut album from last year, Through The Head. With the thrash, economy and acerbic wit of a hardcore outfit but with the distinctively clear vocals of lead singer, Mimi Gallagher, they make taut and catchy spurts of guitar bile that will please fans of the Crutchfield sisters or Aye Nako.

The song gallops into action with some bruising drums and Gallagher’s voice – which sounds worn and bruised from years of wailing and screaming – singing now with a hollow deadpan. The lyrics deal with watching a friend going through life and the metaphor of them “falling off the bridge” – a common pop-punk trope of witnessing a wasted and hopeless youth. But as Gallagher’s voice filters to the top of the mix of bruising overdriven guitars she wails, “no one’s looking for you”. There is something triumphant in her ability to watch anguish and turn back and move on as she steadfastly proclaims, “I won’t watch you drown”.
