Toward the end of last year we reported on a particularly notable happening in one of the closer-to-home corners of Soundcloud. Marc Potgieter, having cut himself loose from the hugely popular bass rap group Ph Fat, was crafting out a new identity for himself as Oh Dark Arrow, and he was bringing a few noted Cape Town luminaries with him, too.
Whatever mystery existed back then has been lifted, and Potgieter is set to drop his first album as Oh Dark Arrow as soon as next week. ‘Secret Ghost’ is the first official single taken off it. The most immediately striking thing about it is that there isn’t a single line of rapping. The song is bare and ominous, led by a single, simple guitar line and propulsive dark synths, with snippets of dialogue from the horror comedy film American Werewolf in London spattered around. Releasing a purely instrumental song first-up is a bold move, but one that makes sense in the broader context of the Oh Dark Arrow project: Potgieter has spent months honing his skills not just as a rapper, but as a producer too, and ‘Secret Ghost’ shows off his chops.
This album is one of Radius’ most anticipated releases of the year. But until it drops next week, ‘Secret Ghost’ will hold us all over. Check out the video, a brilliant and apt animation done by naasFILMS, below.
