Papercut’s Facebook page uses a quote from Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray as its biography, “The artist is the creator of beautiful things. To reveal art and conceal the artist is art’s aim”. And for an artist that released his/her self-titled debut album, in December of 2010, without having released any singles, and who remains unidentified almost 3 years later, it seems a rather fitting description. The aptness doesn’t stop there, the atmospheric blend of orchestral overtures, eerie vocal samples, and ambient electronic elements combined to rather beautiful effect on the album.
However anonymity hasn’t been quite as successful a hype-builder for Papercut as it was for other artists, like Jai Paul or Daft Punk, and perhaps that’s why he/she has finally released a single and announced a new album that will be out in November. The single, ‘Adrift’, features Kristin Mainhart on vocals, and her bluesy voice twinned with a more maximalist sound than was heard on Papercut, makes the track sound like it could very easily soundtrack the next James Bond film. It lacks the sophistication of Papercut’s debut album, but we’re hoping that the forthcoming album sounds like a louder version of this.
