Track of the Day: Radiator Hospital – Cut Your Bangs

“You say you’ll cut your bangs, I’m calling your bluff. And when you lie to me it’s in the small stuff”, Sam Cook-Parrott sings on the chorus of ‘Cut Your Bangs’, the third track from their forthcoming Torch Song. It’s a chorus which absorbs the rest of the song; its verses fade into the blissfully looping jumble of bubblegum guitars and hi-hats. And yet without a significant vocal change, the unadulterated magnetism of the hook manages to lift itself above this.

What is most remarkable about ‘Cut Your Bangs’ is Radiator Hospital’s indubitable skill as pop songcrafters. They build the song around its best lines, and bury its weaker ones into the verses. And yet their ability goes further than that: the lyric sheet speaks of white lies and maggot-like hearts, but what Radiator Hospital understand is that it isn’t the lyric sheet that makes a pop song great, it’s the feeling it creates. And this feels like graceful abandon.
