Two weeks ahead of their release of their sophomore long-player, Atlas, Real Estate have left us positively salivating with the latest single. ‘Crime’ was released ostensibly as a helpful guitar tab tutorial, but somehow acts as an apt summation of the heights the band are willing to ascend. On ‘Crime’, it’s apparent that there hasn’t been a major deviation from their winning formula: a luscious and ringing guitar framework paired with gorgeous lyrical movement. But here the wistful affection for their past is replaced by an ineffable uneasiness with their boundless future.

Those who once found comfort in Martin Courtney’s usually spare and introspective lyrical musings could easily be jostled with the frankness of a line like, “This crowd is growing old, if I may be so bold”.  It’s clear that there’s been a deepening of sound and intent in lieu of mindless egress. More heartening than anything, Real Estate have lost none of their usual lustre in waking up from their endless daydream; they only shine brighter for it.
