Cape Town band Sakawa Boys have been exciting audiences over the last few months with their exhilarating and raw live show and today they have released their first recorded track, ‘Lazy Eys’. The recording was described by the band as “a demo that sounded too good not to be released” and that sounds about right for this track. The song will be recognisable to anyone who has caught any of the few gigs they’ve so far played, and the recording manages to capture the exuberance of their live sound.
The band have taken to half-jokingly calling their sound ‘sungaze’, and there doesn’t seem to be a more apt descriptor for the sound of this song (it certainly rolls off the tongue better than ‘shoegaze-infused indie rock’) – there are elements of softer post-hardcore, wall-of-sound shoegaze and early-2000s indie rock vocals here.
