SBTRKT is probably the most exciting producer in the burgeoning bass music genre. His dance music is based on careful bursts of controlled and precision energy all enveloped in thunderous sub-bass. So the thought of pairing him with indie rock’s reigning doyen, Ezra Koenig, seems incongruous to say the least but their song, “New Dorp, New York” is all about shaking up the logic and going for shuffling and pounding fun.

Built on a creeping bass-line, Koenig vogues and sings with a low velvety voice like a trained house singer that a song like ‘Oxford Comma’ never showed he could be. It is a thorough left turn from both of them from the straight up glammy 4/4 house of SBTRKT and Ezra’s vocals which, despite the new surrounds, have lost none of their wit as he sings about New York, “Gargoyles, gargling oil, peak of the empire, top of the rock”. Whatever the rest of SBTRKT’s new album Wonder Where We Land contains, you won’t stop bobbing your head to this number until the rest comes.
