Spoon are part of that elite group of American major-indie bands together with TV On The Radio, The National and the late LCD Soundsystem that have managed to marry critical affection with commercial appeal. In fact, so established is their excellence that it is easy to forget how good they actually are.

‘Inside Out’ off of their upcoming album They Want My Soul subtly and confidently rises to that challenge. Traversing translucent and elastic soundscapes, it is a straightforward indie-pop song wrapped in a dreamy electronic exoskeleton. Led by Britt Daniel’s strutting croon, its solid rhythm and subtle synth flourishes show what Spoon have perfected: shedding all excess and leaving behind the necessary elements to bore their songs into our heads. That is a formula for success and one that bodes well for their highly anticipated album.
