Prodigal experimentalists The Horrors have returned with the ostensible purpose of establishing traction in their position as Britain’s best band. Swapping the ecstasy for MDMA this time ‘round, the quartet display an un-Skying-like clarity in the first single off Luminous. ‘I See You’ is a seven-and-a-half minute monolith that’s paired with a suitably trippy lyrics video. Interestingly, the quartet seem to have taken an uncharacteristic stance on melody here; ‘catchy’ is not typically a term used to describe their songs, yet ‘I See You’ – but for its length – would not be out of place on the radio. Whether this will be the case for the record as a whole indeed remains to be seen.

The melodic ‘more guitars, more synths, more everything’ approach aside, not much else has changed. Badwan’s vocals are employed in quite the same way and a killer bassline forms the archetypal Horrors backbone. With this track it appears that the Horrors have cottoned on to the fact that, unlike in the ‘Who Can Say’ music video, there are actually people watching them. And the audience must be entertained. The new LP is set to drop in May, but for now, you can listen to ‘I See You’ below.
